Swyn I
Mary Lloyd Jones’s artwork frequently references both Wales’ landscape and its long spiritual history. The artist said: “Through my work, I try to create links with the past, with the lives of previous generations, with folk memory, myths and legends, all of which contribute to the atmosphere of the landscape.” The writing at the bottom of this piece is a series of prayers requesting protection from witchcraft and the title, Swyn, can mean charm or magic. Witchcraft was common in early modern Wales, and blessings, beliefs and rituals were part of everyday life.
