Rugby jersey

Horace Sampson Lyne's rugby shirt. Horace gave a lifetime’s contribution to Welsh rugby. Between 1883 and 1885 he was capped five times for Wales. Horace was co-founder of the International Rugby Board and was the longest serving president of the Welsh Rugby Union. He held the role for 41 years.

Rugby shirt, red cotton jersey, long-sleeved shirt; with Prince of Wales badge on chest, white collar, neck opening and red silk bow tie. Hand-embroidered badge (Prince of Wales feathers) machine-stitched onto left chest; embroidery is carried out using white and light blue thread on dark blue flannel ground; white starched collar encapsulates red jersey fabric and is machine-stitched to neck; 4 mother-of-pearl button fastening at neck; top button is buttoned through the white collar and is slightly smaller than the other three and only has 2 holes, rather than 4; button holes in jersey fabric are hand-stitched, while top button hole in collar is machine-stitched; neck-opening has facing of red cotton twill-woven fabric; small red bow-tie of Petersham ribbon (width = 1 1/4in); sleeves ending in 10cm long, narrow jersey-knit cuffs; semi-circular facing of red jersey fabric applied to inner neck at centre back; white cotton label with printed maker's mark stitched to lower edge, inner centre back; maker's mark is also printed onto inner collar, proper right side; No. '16' printed onto inner collar PL side of CB; the bow is not a 'proper' bow but the fabric is arranged in the shape of a bow and kept in position with the help of two pins; knitted pattern near lower hem (PR of centre front) appears to spell: '....C' and on reverse of lower hem: '35' (?); remains of threads and stitch/pin holes = evidence of previous display and previous attachment of card label.
