The Jewish shepherd
Josef Herman described this work in a 1975 letter to Amgueddfa Cymru as one of his most important of the period. He painted it in Glasgow following his arrival from Poland, where he fled from Nazi persecution in the late 1930s. Given the unimaginable trauma being experienced by the Jewish population of Europe at the time the work was painted, its subject matter takes on enormous significance.
