Cup and saucer
Cup and saucer, earthenware, the cup of inverted and truncated conical form with flared flattened conical foot and a handle formed from two solid conjoined discs of different sizes, the saucer with rounded foot ring, flat base and straight flared sides, covered with an orange-red uranium glaze.
This cup and saucer is from a tea set designed in 1930. Haël's striking orange-red uranium glaze was one of Grete Marks's most distinctive achievements and was highly praised by critics at the 1929 Deutscher Werkbund exhibition in Breslau. This striking conical design has become a modernist icon, making a clear break with historical precedent and avoiding all surface decoration.
