Harp
Triple harp awarded as a prize by Lady Llanover at the Abergavenny Eisteddfod, 1848. As a prominent member of Cymreigyddion y Fenni, Lady Llanover set competitions for triple harpists in their eisteddfodau. Rather than receiving a medal or cash as a prize, the winner would be awarded a new harp. This harp was won by Edward Hughes (Eos Maldwyn) in 1848.
Cymreigyddion y Fenni is a society founded in 1833 to promote Welsh language and culture in Monmouthshire. One of the main aims of the Society was to hold eisteddfodau. These were so popular that a hall was purpose-built in Abergavenny to accommodate them. The main patron of the eisteddfodau was no other than Lady Llanover. This collection of medals show the wide range of competitions held – such as poetry, essay writing, harp playing and craftwork.
