Roman gravestone (M. Valerius [Tus]cus)
Right-hand half of gravestone only, with the inscription cut on an ansate plaque within a plain moulded border.
[Matu]rius [Fus]cus was a beneficiarius, a soldier seconded to the personal staff of the legionary commander. His home town of Cemenelum is near Nice in France.
[D(is)] M(anibus) / [Matu]rius M(arci) / [F(ilius) Cl(audia tribu) Fus]cus Cem(eneli) / […..] VI eres / […..] VI b(ene)f(iciarius) leg(ati)
‘To the spirits of the departed; [Matu]rius [Fus]cus, son of Marcus, of the Claudian voting-tribe, from Cemenelum … set up by his heir … beneficiarius of the legate.’

Site Name: Isca Road, Ultra Pontem (Caerleon)
Notes: found on the left bank of the River Usk in mud behind house of donor. It presumably came originally from the cemetery on the hillslope above the find-spot.
