The Aran Isles
The spontaneous technique recalls John's vivid portraits of Dorelia and Edwin John of 1911. This landscape probably dates from the summer of 1912 when the artist visited Connemara and the Aran isles on the West Coast of Ireland. That autumn, he stayed at Chirk Castle with Lord Howard de Walden, who once owned this picture. It is distinctly reminiscent of the work of J.D.Innes, who was John's frequent painting companion during the period.
