Roman samian bowl, decorated
Bowl (Dr 37) unstamped, but in the style of the potter DONNAUCUS. Central Gaulish. A.D. 100-120
The decoration is divided into a series of panels: 1. Upper compartment – griffin, lower compartment – hare 2. Upper compartment – Hercules front, lower compartment – four rings 3. Upper compartment – female figure, Hercules front and female figure, lower compartment – double palmette-ornament 4. Upper compartment - possibly Hercules and female figure, lower compartment – four large rings 5. Male figure

Samian ware was made in Gaul, and was imported into Britain on a vast scale during the first and second centuries A.D. The shapes are standard and have been numbered by researchers.
