British Antarctic Expedition, 1913, letter

Typed letter signed Edward R.G.R. Evans (Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans, Lord Mountevans (1880-1957)) to The Welsh Tinplate & Metal Stamping Co., Limited of Llanelly (sic), on British Antarctic Expedition 'Terra Nova' R.Y.S. headed paper. Dated 'Antarctic 31 January 1913'. 1 page, offering a testimonial to "the various cooking utensils, etc., supplied by your firm" which had "withstood very severe tests, severe in all weathers both ashore and afloat. The goods, therefore, must be of the highest quality and of great durability". Written by Evans on board the 'Terra Nova' as she made her way north to New Zealand, bringing the news of the death of Scott and his companions. With the finding of the Polar party on 11 November 1912 Evans, as next in command, took over as leader of the expedition.

S.Y. TERRA NOVA. Auxiliary barque of 764 tons, was built by Messrs Alexander Stephens and Sons, Dundee in 1884 for the whaling trade. Although nearly thirty years old at the time of Captain Scott's expedition, she was chosen for it because of her suitability for work in the Antarctic ice. Her beams were fourteen ins thick, her bows were nine feet of solid wood, and her stem was sheathed with iron plating.
