Roman mosaic

Square panel containing a poised square with a mat of guilloche (blue-grey strands shaded red and white) with the triangular interspaces holding blue-grey and white chessboard patterns of triangles.Tesserae: blue-grey, red and white, 20mm: border: purplish-brown, 30mm.

Part of the paving of an east-west passage/porticus separating the north range from an eastern wing.

This mosaic is from the corridor of a Roman town house, 300-400 CE. Roman mosaic floors were constructed using small stone cubes, known as tesserae. Tesserae were generally made from locally available stone. Blue/black, red, white and yellow were the main colours. The stone was probably sawn into sticks, from which individual tesserae were chipped using a hammer and chisel.
