Obverse. On a horse galloping to sinister, the 6th Earl of Derby, Robert de Ferrers, in armour, the visor of his flat-topped helmet closed. A convex, nearly triangular, shield (vairy, on fine impressions) slung by a strap over his left shoulder; his right hand holds his sword aloft. Horse caparisoned with the arms of FERRERS, vairy. In the legend, partly wanting, the E and R in ‘Derbye’ are conjoined
