Unknown steamer painted on leaf (painting)
Portrait of an unknown steamer painted on a leaf. Unsigned and undated.
This unusual portrait of a ship executed on a leaf is unique in the museum’s collection. It was discovered in the leaves of a family Bible by Miss Nora Jenkins of Aberporth in 1982. Whilst it has proved very difficult to trace the type or the country of origin of the leaf (since identified see comments), the steamer portrayed thereon bears the house colours of Morel Ltd. of Cardiff. The painting was probably done by the late Captain Samuel Jenkins of Aberporth, Miss Jenkin’s uncle, who served on board Morel’s SS Cardiff for fifteen months when he first went to see in 1909. His three voyages on the vessel involved visits to Asia and both continents of America, so the leaf could have come from any of these places.
