Petticoat
Wool petticoat of grey and brown vertical stripes (1.4cm wide). Yolk of brown cotton twill. Two metal buttons at centre back waist, black wool plaited tape encapsulating hem. All stitching done by hand, apart from two vertical seams on upper part of yolk (one inside, one outside; proper right side of skirt). Circa 8cm wide hem guard of brown cotton twill (as above). Skirt is pleated into yolk.
Main striped fabric is made from brown cotton warps and brown and grey wool wefts. The fabric here is used cross-ways with the wefts orientated in the vertical direction; there is a selvage running across the upper edge; It is not clear whether the lower edge of the fabric is also a selvage as there is a turn-back at the bottom and the actual edge is hidden underneath the stitched on hem-guard.
