Roman samian bowl, decorated
Restored samian bowl (form 30) by the potter Martialis. South Gaulish. A.D. 50-60 The external surface has floral and animal decoration with two male figures, one of them half lost, and horizontal grooving at regular intervals.The bowl has a glossy red slip made of very fine clay mixed with water. It contains a higher proportion of potassium and sodium, which allows it to melt onto the body of the pottery.
