S.S. YEW TREE, glass negative
Starboard broadside view of S.S. YEW TREE at Cardiff Docks.
John Stewart established a business as a ship sale and purchase broker at Glasgow in 1899, but he decided to move into shipowning in the 1920s, acquiring his first steam coaster in 1923. The 823 gross ton Yewtree was built to his order at Bowling in 1928 and is seen here in the Roath Basin, c. 1948. The company's vessels were nicknamed the 'Yew-boats', an amusing pun on the name generally given to German submarines in both world wars.
