Stocking darner
Darning mushrooms are used to repair holes in stockings. The stocking is stretched over the head of the mushroom and held in place around the neck. A needle and thread is then used to repair the hole using darning stitch - simple long running stitches which are sewn in close succession. This example was made in about 1875 by Thomas Llewellyn of Cathays Terrace, Cardiff, for his wife Celia.
