Argoed & Bedwellty Colliery Co pound note
Bank note issued by Argoed and Bedwellty Colliery Company under the trading name Newport on 9th September 1806 for the value one pound. Signed by John Hampden Smith.
Argoed Colliery consisted of a series of levels in the Mynyddislwyn seam. The company was owned by Morgan and Son in 1888, and later by ED Williams, and by Budd and Company in 1913 when it employed 50 men.
The Bedwellty Pits were operated by the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company from the mid- 1800s to the 1930s.
The bridge in the picture is the Newport Town Bridge, which was built in 1800 by David Edwards. The bridge has since been replaced twice, once in 1866 and again in 1927. The foundation inscription for the 1800 bridge can be seen in the bridge at Caerleon.
