Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe
Complete three ribbed socketed axe of long slender form. High placed loop extends from thin outsplayed mouth moulding. Three slightly convergent longitudinal ribs extend from mouth moulding on each face. Exterior shape of mouth oval, whilst interior shape sub-rectangular. Evidence of four runners on mouth top, three projecting and one negative scar. Body of axe is rectangular with angled side edges. Base of socket evenly shaped. Sides of axe straight but slightly divergent at blade end. No recurving of sides. Untrimmed flashes on both sides of mouth mouldings. Casting flashes visible down both sides, but look trimmed. Striations parallel to the blade edge indicate preparation for use. Cutting edge blunted by recent corrosion. Dark grey patina, overlain by green patina with lighter green carbonate encrustations.
