Truncheon
Used by donor's grandfather, David Parry at Beaufort, Monmouthshire
The painting and decorating of a truncheon was more than just ornamentation - by having a royal crown or coat of arms, it showed that the constable was acting with the authority of the Crown.
Constable's wooden truncheon, Victorian, painted black with crown painted in red and inscriptions VR and 3. Unpainted and turned at one end to form handgrip. Turned butt with 2 holes in neck, through which a silk cord is attached
