Sierra Nevada
SARGENT, John Singer (Born in Florence of American parents, Sargent studied in Italy and Paris before settling in London in 1886. By the turn of the century he was acclaimed as Britain's greatest portrait painter.)
The brilliant light and its effects on the panoramic mountain scene are the focus of this work. Deeply coloured shadows accentuate the contours of the land, setting off the sunlit areas. The subject is the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain. Sargent trained in Paris and was an admirer of the French outdoor landscape painters.
