Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of Arthur Orton who posed as Sir R. Tichborne (the Tichborne claimant), white earthenware with a thin blue tinted glaze, standing on an oval plinth inscribed in raised capitals, brown and black firing speckles on flat upper part of base. Figure very lightweight and entirely uncoloured, figure in contemporary dress, of shoes, narrow trousers strapped under the instep, waistcoat, watch and chain, jacket, shirt, necktie, whiskers and beaver hat, left arm bent across chest and holding a small bird, right arm bent hand resting on the barrell of a rifle?, rocky ground and back support.
