ECM: Llangan; slab cross (replica)

Clarke, William
MANUFACTURER

Disc-head and part of shaft of a standing cross , the latter splayed out towards the base. There are two faces with weathered decoration in low relief. A. (West Face) 1. The disc-head contains a crucifixion scene in a sunken panel framed by a broad border. The figure of Christ wearing a loincloth faces front, arms extended to the edge of the frame. The featrues are crudely rendered, and it is uncertain whether the face is bearded. Each of the lower quadrants is almost filled by a human figure in profile facing inwards, that on the right, bearing a lance, representing Longinus, that on the left being less distinguishable, but almost certainly representing Stephaton, the sponge-bearer, a stick bearing the sponge over his shoulder.. 2. On the shaft below the feet of Christ is part of a smaller figure, also facing front with extended arms. There is a small object, appartnely cylindrical, in the right hand; in the left is an inward-curving horn or short bow. C. (East Face) The disc-head is filled with a ring-cross in low relief, each sunken quadrant showing traces of a raised disc with central hole.
