Photograph (print)
Coal face and workers. The two miners shown are working a 7ft thick seam of coal by undercutting at floor level and taking down the top coal, temporarily supported by wooden sprag. The miners earnings depended on the amount of large coal produced. The miner on the left is filling the lumps into a wooden tram. Each miner's place was illuminated by a flame lamp of 1 candle power (a 60 watt bulb gives 55 candle power).
