Nantgarw China Works (1813 - 1822)

Cup of soft-paste porcelain, the cup standing on a straight sided foot rim, indented immediately above, ogee shaped cup with everted lip rim; kidney handle looped high above lip rim; the cup freely painted on the exterior with small motifs in gilt, one sprig with flower shapes and leaves, one flower head and three leaves, one butterfly, the sides of the interior painted with a border consisting of four panels, two large panels with an urn on a tall, scrolling pedestal in underglaze blue, spouting flames in red and gilt, flanked by two phoenix style birds in olive green, perched on red willows; one panel with caillouté gilding of underglaze blue and green supported by two wreathed ionic columns; one smaller panel with an imari style flower in gilt on an iron red ground, with an imari style flower in iron red forming a central motif to the interior base, gilding to foot rim, lip rim, the handle and forming outline of the interior panels.
