Devil's Bridge, Aberystwyth, magazine
The Devil's Bridge, near Aberystwyth, magazine extract including photograph and brief account of the bridges' history.
Photograph by Valentines & Sons Ltd., Dundee.
The top steel bridge was supplied and erected in 1900 by Rees & Kirby Ltd. The legend relates that an elderly woman owned land on both sides of the gorge. To save her a lot of walking the Devil is said to have offered her a bridge on condition that he possessed the soul of the first living thing to cross his bridge. He built her bridge but the old woman saved her soul by driving a pig across in front of her.
Rees and Kirby Ltd. build a wide variety of things in Steelwork, but you will find the terms and conditions much more reasonable.
