Jug, red earthenware, standing on a spreading waisted foot-rim, globular body with several pronounced concentric rings around the lower body, cylindrical flaring neck with a series of pronounced concentric rings around it, a beaded band around the exterior lip-rim, beak spout with foliate-moulding to the underside, scrolled and foliate-moulded loop handle with raised thumb-spur and further inner and outer spurs lower down; around the middle of the exterior body a wide yellow band against which are reserved three round panels enclosed by brown borders, the panel to the front of the body transfer-printed in black with a group of fruit, the panel to one side of the body transfer-printed in black with a scene showing a head and shoulders portrait of a male figure supported on either side by two winged female figures who hold a laurel wreath over it, to the top of the scene is printed the inscription "LAFAYETTE", the panel to the other side of the body transfer-printed in black with a scene showing a group of male figures in military uniform, one of whom is handing a sword to another, below the scene is printed the inscription "CORNWALLIS / Resigning his sword at York Town Oct 19. 1781", the side panels flanked by foliate motifs in brown, the foot, lower body, shoulder, interior and exterior neck, spout and handle covered in copper lustre.
