Trough
Slate salting trough used to salt pieces of meat and/or fish. Salt would be used to cure meat and / or fish in order to preserve them, and therefore extent their shelve life.
The trough is made from five slabs of slate which have been cut with a circular saw (circular saw blade marks can been seen on the edges of the slabs). The slate slabs are fixed together using bolts and rods. There are bolts and two metal rods along the two shorter sides of the trough, and bolts and a metal brace along the two long sides. The slabs are believed to be slate from one of the Dyffryn Nantlle quarries due to its ‘green’ colour, and also as it was collected from Dyffryn Nantlle.
There is a removable slate shelve / divider in the trough, approximately three quarters of the way along the length of the trough. This creates two sections within the trough, or can be removed to create one large section. The trough possibly had a lid, but was not present when the donor purchased the trough.
