Late Iron Age copper alloy object
Irregular trapezoidal-shaped, copper alloy plate, curved across its longitudinal axis. Each corner is rounded and pierced by a circular fixing hole (diameter c.2mm) which is the centre of localised corrosion products. The outer, convex, surface of the plate is decorated by an incised border, which passes outside the fixing holes, and two incised diagonals running from close to the incised border's corners forming a St. Andrew's cross design. The execution of the piece is poor and unbalanced, none of the edges are parallel, the application of the incised decoration is unequal, and in one corner the border design is botched. The central portion of the plate has been crumpled and the surface is marked by a series of short, aligned scratches. It is uncertain whether this damage is ancient or not.

Site Name: Llyn Cerrig Bach, Cae Ifan Farm
Notes: Found during the construction of an airfield at RAF Station Valley. Some certainly, the rest probably, from a wet meadow which formed the margin of Llyn Cerrig Bach. The exact depth below the grassy surface at which the objects were deposited is not known. The bog was excavated to a maximum depth of 20 feet. A few objects were found on the spot, after the peaty deposit had been won from the boggy margin of the lake. The rest, with the exception of 44.32/58, were found on that portion of the adjacent aerodrome on which the peat from this site had been spread. Animal bones were associated with the deposit and many metal objects were stained with vivianite.
