Iron Age iron brooch
Iron brooch sitting somewhere between Hull and Hawkes Group 1A and group 1Bb, possibly group 1Bx. It has a small three coil spring with external chord, a high arched bow and a footplate terminating in a flat disc not joined to the bow. The high arch of the bow would place this brooch within group 1A but these generally have much larger coil springs, although the iron brooch from Crickley Hill (p83, no.7980, PL.24) has a very similar shape and dimensions. The flat disc terminal can also be paralleled by Bronze brooches within this group. However, this example could also possibly be paralled by an iron example placed in group 1Bx from Maiden Castle (p89, no.2087, PL.27) but this has a more splayed bow and a missing foot making exact comparisons difficult. Later examples, while continuing to utilise the disc shaped terminal have longer, slightly flattened bows.
