19th century token : Carmarthen

A silver one shilling token issued by Morris & Sons in Carmarthen. Morris & Sons was a private bank established in the late 18th century and ran until its acquisition by the National Provincial Bank of England in 1868. The cockerel was the Morris family crest.

Tokens were issued by corporations, tradespersons and businesses to act as alternative currency in exchange for their services. In the early 19th century, this helped compensate for the shortage of official silver currency during the Napoleonic Wars.
