Rhymney ironworks, photograph

Freke, Alfred (Mr)

Bute (west bank) rail and fishplate mills from east. Showing four Whitwell hot blast stoves behind (Nos. 4, 5 and 6 blast furnaces, to right, obscured by smoke), southern gable of southern block of fitting shops on extreme right (north), and Rhymney Railway in foreground. As this photo is part of a set along with the remainder of this accession, it is presumed to be of same date, i.e. post 1880/81 and pre 1891.

Bute Works, Rhymney was established in 1825, had its first Bessemer convertor in 1877 and closed in 1891. The Rhymney Railway is in the foreground. The main group of buildings in this view are the Bute Rail and Fishplate Mills. The four tall structures in the background are four whitwell hot blast stoves, the three blast furnaces to their right being obliterated by smoke.

At extreme right is the south gable of the southern block of the fitting shops.
