Bedgown

Part of a colourful costume worn by a member of the Royal Welsh Ladies Choir in the 1930s. It was designed to stand out on stage. The choir from Pontypridd travelled in north America and Europe and performed in their Welsh costumes. They were selling Wales to the world.

red & black striped flannel bedgown; edges of turn-backs at cuffs, centre front opening of skirt section, bottom edge of bodice and skirt are bound in black wool twill tape. two decorative domed metal buttons at centre back waist; They're embossed with a woven pattern and appear to be painted (?). Two large and one small popper button fastening (copper alloy) down centre front of bodice section. These have a black coating. Selvage edges along centre back seam; Seam at waist; black cotton tape stitched over turn-back at inside of neck opening. Remains of roughly stitched yellow threads along this tape (not clear what function they had, perhaps to secure a neckkerchief?). Seams are machine stitched using black thread. Hand stitches to secure buttons and poppers.

bedgown, Welsh costume petticoat, Welsh costume apron, Welsh costume shawl, Welsh costume hat
