Recordiad sain / Audio recording: Maria Grazia De Rosa
Oral history recording with Maria Grazia De Rosa. Recorded as part of the Italian Memories in Wales project (2008-10), delivered by ACLI-ENAIP and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
00:00:12 Maria Grazia goes on to talk about farm work which was all done by and with animals. They travelled far to a mill with their wheat in order to be able to have a sufficient amount for bread to feed the family- this was mostly her grandfather’s job but she has memories of helping him sieve the flour and baking bread early in the morning. She recalls her grandfather as a strong man who never went to school but raised nine children.
00:05:13 When asked about the social life in her town she recalls that the community was very close and would help each other in times of need. For example; if someone was pregnant they couldn’t afford a midwife, someone may be paid in eggs. She recalls some names of other people in the town; their nickname was Forfeggia as once they lost the forbice, scissors and that name stuck. Mostly people would meet in the church or at festivals which she describes. Their priest was Domenico Belmonte, Maria Grazia describes him and their church.
