Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of Princess May, white earthenware, standing on an oval plinth inscribed in raised gilt capitals. In contemporary dress, white dress with bright gilt detailing and raised band of gilt diamonds and dots around base of skirt, fan shaped reticule hanging from cord around right wrist, white bodice with gilt stripes, gilt necklace with pendant cross around throat, brown hair with fringe, right arm slightly bent with hand resting on upper part of torso, left hand leaning on square topped pedestal.
