Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of the Duke of Connaught mounted on horseback facing left, white earthenware, on an irregular base inscribed in gilt capitals. Largely white and gilt, the Duke in military dress and helmet with knee high black boots seated on red saddle with a blue fringe, with a pink sash around his waist and across chest, black sword hanging from waist under left arm, black hair and moustache. Seated astride a gilt spotted, stepping, horse, , figure resting left hand on thigh and holding reins, right forearm resting on horse's mane
