Sampler
LINEN CANVAS, embroidered with coloured silks and wools in cross and eyelet stitches, At the top, in seven horizontal rows, separated by narrow bands of geometrical ornament, are alphabets and numerals to 18. In a row across the middle are initials. Beneath is the inscription: “Jane Mc Dougal born Jan 9 / 1850” together with the date 1863 which is, presumably, the date of working the sampler. At the bottom is a house flanked by trees, the space above being filled with floral, bird, dog and crown designs symmetrically arranged. There is a narrow stripe border.
