Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of the Prince of Wales, white earthenware, crackle glaze, standing on green grass, oval plinth inscribed in gilt script. In state dress, of black shoes, white trousers, long white jacket with gilt chains and stars, pink belt, blue garter sash from left shoulder, bow of ribbons on each shoulder, naturalistically painted face with brown moustache, beard and hair. Right hand on hip, left arm resting on wide pillar draped in an orange/ yellow state robe, fringed in grey with black spots simulating ermine, pink and blue Prince of Wales feathers on ground by foot on left hand side.
