Rolls Royce Conway 540 engine

Rolls Royce

Rolls-Royce Conway bypass jet engine. Could achieve 8000 hp on takeoff. Thrust of 18,000 lbs. Constructor's number '7053'. As fitted to standard Vickers VC10 passenger aircraft. When its maximum service life was completed it was stripped down, sectioned and restored to display condition by the apprentices at British Airways Engine Overhall Plant at Treforest.

This Rolls-Royce Conway jet engine was overhauled at Treforest. When its maximum service life was completed it was stripped down, sectioned and restored to display condition by the British Airways apprentices at Treforest. This type of engine was used mainly in the Vickers VC-10 passenger aircraft and could achieve 8000 HP on take-off. It is a much simpler and more reliable engine than a piston engine. When the Conway entered service it was the first of a new generation of bypass jet engines with offered greater fuel economy. (Source: Welsh Industrial & Maritime Museum Guidebook, 1984).
