A knife comprising a curved blade with a curved lip at the end, and an ivory handle, kept in a soft leather sheath. Sore hooves were treated by thinning the sole around the painful area using the searcher. It could also be used to cut out the clip-hole at the toe and to press home a horse shoe being fitted. The searcher was a smaller version of the farrier's knife.
