Seal impression: Durham Episcopal
An elaborate seal, perhaps reflecting the alleged ostentatious character of the bishop, standing under a trefoiled canopy. Vested in pontificals, with jewelled mitre and ornate crook, his chasuble blazoned: semy de lis, a lion rampant, BEAUMONT; above the canopy, a lion of ENGLAND (missing here). In field, diapered lozengy, with fleur-de-lis in the spaces, comes the first occurence of shields (as distinct from blazons) on a Durham seal: dext. three lions passant guardant in pale, ENGLAND; sin. a cross potent between twelve plain crosslets.
