Quilting frame

Wooden quilting frame used by Mari Lewis, the village quilter of Llangeitho. The frame was made for her in 1887 by the local carpenter. Born in 1867, her account book shows she was a prolific maker. Most of her customers came from Llangeitho and Tregaron, but some lived in London. Her most popular commissions were cotton sateen quilts.

Quilters use simple wooden frames to keep all three layers of a quilt taut and even during the stitching process. These frames consist of two long ‘rails’ and two shorter ‘stretchers’ which slot-together to form an adjustable rectangle. The ‘stretches’ are held in place with pegs fixed into holes.
