Most dated examples of this type of anchor stock date from the late third to late first century BC, with a few examples of early first century AD date. Its decoration supports this, and may help to refine the dating. The row of four lumps, representing knucklebones each a different way up, is known on other lead stocks, two of which are from datable wrecks, of about 140–130 BC.
