M.V. MERCHANT PRINCE, negative
¾ Starboard bow view of M.V. MERCHANT PRINCE.
MERCHANT PRINCE. Built 1939 by William Doxford & Sons Ltd., Sunderland, for Drake Shipping Co Ltd., managed by Lykiardopulo & Co., London. While en route from Algiers to Gibraltar, she was hit by torpedoes from U-77 on 16 March 1943, northwest of Oran, Algiers, causing the death of one of the 45 crew. Initially abandoned, she was reboarded the next day and towed to Oran, Algiers where, after temporary repairs, she sailed on to Glasgow for a more permanent repair. She remained with the company until she was broken up at Hong Kong in 1963. (Source: uboat. net).
