MERCHANT PRINCE. Built 1939 by William Doxford & Sons Ltd., Sunderland, for Drake Shipping Co Ltd., managed by Lykiardopulo & Co., London. While en route from Algiers to Gibraltar, she was hit by torpedoes from U-77 on 16 March 1943, northwest of Oran, Algiers, causing the death of one of the 45 crew. Initially abandoned, she was reboarded the next day and towed to Oran, Algiers where, after temporary repairs, she sailed on to Glasgow for a more permanent repair.
