Moorland landscape
CRESWICK, Thomas (1811-1869)
The high outcrop on the left and the winding road leads the eye into the scene. These are compositional devices, and recall the contrived neo-classical landscapes of the late eighteenth century. This is an one of the artist’s early works, but the vivid effect created by the azure-blue sky and dark shadows hint at Creswick’s later manner developed through painting out of doors. Having trained in Birmingham, Creswick settled in London in 1828. He specialised in landscapes of Wales, Yorkshire and Cornwall, and occasionally collaborated with Richard Ansdell and W.P.Frith.
