Seal impression: Royal

Reverse. The king on horseback to sinister, in hauberk and surcoat of mail, with conical helmet and hood (on clear impressions); he bears in his right hand a sword inclined towards him and almost touching the + commencing the legend. On his left arm, suspended around his neck by a strap, and drawn close to his body, is a concave shield with a spiked central boss, charged on the dexter side with a lion rampant contourny. Ailes argues that there was no opposing lion on the sinister portion. It is the first such heraldic charge to appear on the great seal of an English monarch. Horse-trappings, head-gear, ornamental saddle and breast-band. The H, E and G, of the legend are in Lombardic Capitals. Birch, though not Blair, omits the H in Richardus. The H is a reverse Gothic-type majuscule.
