Maesycwmmer Woollen Mill, photograph

Photograph captioned 'Maesycwmmer Woollen Mill. A four storeyed mill built during the first half of the 19th century when there was a great demand for flannel shirts by coal miners and ironworkers alike. The two upper doorways in the front of the mill building were used for hoisting purposes: part of the hoist is still visible above the top door. The right-angled corners of the end and side walls are made of dressed stone, always a pleasing feature of this kind of 19th century building, this one is still in use as a wool grading centre. The background to the photograph is the spectacular railway viaduct built in 1857 to provide a link with the Taff Vale Railway. The arches and the slender piers of the viaduct are not without charm and elegance.' Mounted on card. Made for the exhibition RECORDING WALES 3 in 1970/1971.
