Under a canopied niche of late-gothic style, a sovereign (perhaps William the Conqueror, patron of the founder) crowned and seated, in his left hand a sword. In niches to either side, nearest the king: two standing courtiers. In the outer niches: a guard holding a stave or mace. On the plinth below, an inscription referring to the martyrdom of St Pancras: maritriale decus tribuit michi cesaris ira (Bl.). In base, under a broad arch, an executioner beheading the saint; behind him a scroll entitled: S' Pancrati. All between two shields, dext. chequy, WARRENE (for William de Warrenne, earl of Surrey, founder); sin. quarterly, 1. and 4. a lion rampant , FITZALAN (for Richard Fitzalan, earl of Arundel, later benefactor and patron ), 2. and 3. WARRENNE.
