Alarm rattle
Police rattle used to raise an alarm or summon aid. Constructed of wood, with two blades held in a frame and a ratchet turned - to make the blades `snap' thus creating a very loud noise.
Used by donor's grandfather, David Davies of Cardiff, in the 1850s. Rattles began to be replaced by police whistles from the 1880s
