Tunic

Royal Welsh Fusiliers Officer's 1902 pattern full dress tunic. Scarlet with black facings and brass buttons. Lieutenant's rank insignia. Flash of five lengths of 5.7cm wide black silk Petersham ribbon attached at nape of neck (L=24.5cm)

Made from red fulled wool, black felt at cuffs and collar; cuffs and collar also decorated with gold metal thread braid; either side of collar also has domed decoration (probably made of wood) covered in coils of metal wire, beside a design of feathers made from metal thread. Epaulettes made of gold and silver metal thread and silk threads. Epaulettes have a stiff interlining and are buttoned onto a domed brass button. 8 larger domed brass buttons down centre front, marked with Prince of Wales plumes and 'Royal Welsh Fusiliers'.

Upper section of tunic is lined with fine fawn coloured silkl, quilted against a padded interlining made of white wool fleece; lower section (from waist down) lined with cream fulled wool. Hand-stitched, fabric label at inner neck which bears the woven inscription: 'A&NCSL, CUTR... O.N....' and hand-inscribed name of owner in ink.

Collar lined in black silk over a stiff interlining. Edge of collar and centre front trimmed with binding in white fulled wool (twill construction). Two brass hook and eye fastenings at neck. Black silk-covered flap attached underneath hook and eye fastening on proper left side. 6 domed buttons at lower centre back, in line with 25cm long vent at lower centre back (there is no actual vent: the slit is stitched up). Lower centre back trimmed with piping in white fulled wool. Raw edge along lower edge of tunic.

Retains Royal Fusiliers Museum accession label (stitched to lower lining)
